One of our own squad has spoken out regarding his future – and he has declared his intent to stay at Arsenal.
Granit Xhaka has been on international duty with Switzerland, but took time to speak to the media in the aftermath of Switzerland’s defeat to both Portugal and England. When he did sit in front of the microphones, he was asked to speak about the rumours circulating about his intentions for next season.
Xhaka replied, saying “I’m not aware of exit talks. I have another four years on my contract. I only signed last year. I’m happy there, my family too. That’s the most important thing.”
His comments are on the back of rumours revolving around the rebuilding job taking place at Inter Milan. New owners, new manager and a concerted effort to get the club back where it belongs. Antonio Conte has already arrived and the next step is to hunt for new recruits, recruits that were rumoured to include Granit Xhaka to lead the midfield.
The strange thing is, the response from Gooners was mixed. Some were loath to lose the Swiss midfielder, and some seemed willing to drive the player to the San Siro themselves. His performances from last season matched this mixed bag too – fizzing shots and some beautiful long-range passing, interspersed with some woeful lapses in concentration that cost us at times.
His partnership with Lucas Torreira did show signs of blossoming though. And it is this that Unai Emery will be keen to grow. With the two forming a decent pivot, it can give our team the platform they need, so selling Xhaka would not have been in our best interests as we would have had to replace quickly.
Inter Milan will be in the market for a player of Xhaka’s position, but it appears that we can plan around Xhaka for at least next season.
Xhaka is an Arsenal player, and we can concentrate on incomings at least for the timebeing.
