There is no 'I' in Team

Our first eleven is perhaps the strongest it has been since the halcyon days of Wenger and trophy-laden seasons gone by in the early 2000’s.In every position, we have proven quality, international experience and top flight talent. But it will be our squad depth that will prove to be the difference when it comes to duking it out for honours. In defence, the additions of Sokratis and Stephane Lichtsteiner has shaken up the regimen at the back. Players who thought they would have their positions locked down, now have an eye over their shoulder, and see viable competition breathing down their necks. We even have the likes of Calum Chambers on loan to get games. In midfield, Granit Xhaka is starting to show his true colours and the player we bought from Borussia Moenchengladbach. His weakness in tracking runners is now not so much in focus due to the timely addition of Lucas torreira, but it is also out of the spotlight because he has improved, in part due to Emery’s ability to swap players out at the merest hint of a bad performance.Up top, Aubameyang and Lacazette are forming a deadly partnership, but Danny Welbeck is chipping in with goals, Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are both acutely aware that they need to continually perform to keep their first eleven spots, and Alex Iwobi is a reminder that a changed eleven will not necessarily weaken the team. Our players are benefitting from the increased numbers, the knowledge that there are players in the squad champing at the bit to take their shirt is elevating levels.Couple that with the merciless approach that Emery is taking, and we have levels rising. So our bigger squad is having an effect, but there is another plus point too. With cup competition involvement meaning inevitable fixture congestion, rotation is inevitable. With a weaker squad, that could threaten elimination from one of the trophies, a slump down the league table - or both. With the likes of Holding, Lichtsteiner, Kolasinac, Elneny, Willock, Maitland-Niles, Iwobi, Welbeck and Nketiah providing excellent options if our other players aren’t up to scratch or simply suffering from exhaustion, we have backup to fill any slots, which won’t hinder any push for glory. We could still do with a couple more in certain positions, but we can rest assured we are on the right path and with a wee bit of luck, we could really do something in the near future.
