The Wilfried Zaha Conundrum

When Wilfried Zaha was first linked with Arsenal, what did you think? I couldn't really believe it. First, because we only had a reported £40 million to spend, but second, was this a rare sign of ambition from the club? Granted, we have spent on real quality in players like Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but here we were addressing an issue in the need for a winger straight away, and emphatically.I wonder what you think of Zaha, because he divides opinion. For me, he remains one of the most exciting players in the league. How many players, in this day and age, are fearless, can beat a man almost all of the time, and can combine sublime trickery with goals and assists? Yes, some may argue his disciplinary record and the fact that he can go down relatively easy at times are issues, but, not only do I disagree with these, I think his creativity and quality outweigh any risks. Imagine a front three of Zaha, Lacazette and Aubameyang! The thing is, as many fans have stated, and you may be one of them, if it came to a trade off between a winger and a centre back, we really shouldn't be signing the winger in my opinion. Last season, how many times do you remember saying, damn we missed an attacking presence in that game, or, damn we should have scored more? The onus has always been on our defending, and the constant defensive mistakes we make. The final reason we should leave signing Zaha in my opinion, if we could only sign him or a centre back, is because we already have potential in the squad. Alex Iwobi, Reiss Nelson, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka are four highly talented attacking options, waiting to shine. So, what if we started with Iwobi, and if he consistently fails, bring in Reiss / Bukayo / Gabriel? Imagine the competition and how it could bring out the best in all four! What is their to lose, if we already have our two, proven world class strikers in Lacazette and Aubameyang? To conclude, I would like to offer an alternative argument, which a friend of mine, Harry, reminded me of today. Mesut Ozil! Signing Zaha may well see the end of Ozil's Arsenal career, yet he is more than capable of filling in the winger position, as he has done before, and I'd like to explore this more in a separate article. So now we have at least five wingers in the waiting at the club! Speaking of Ozil, thoughts go out to him and Sead Kolasinac, a true hero, and I am glad the pair and their wives are well.Thank you for taking the time to read my first article, and I look forward to reading your comments and views.
