Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopolous has reportedly been in talks with Arsenal, according to the Evening Standard.

The 29 year old is available for around the 15m mark after talks on a contract negotiation at the German club broke down. This plays right into the hands of Arsenal’s Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi, who are heading up the clubs recruitment effort this summer.

Arsenal are in the market for a defender, especially with last season’s showings highlighting our weakness at the back.

With Sokratis at a cut price with his contract running down, and his willingness to leave BVB, this move suits both parties.

Apparently, negotiations between the defender and the clubs are ongoing, but it is far from a done deal, with Sokratis attracting interest from other clubs in England and some in Italy too. This means it could come down to a bidding war.

Sven Mislintat will be hugely influential in deal talks, with the Arsenal man having deep Dortmund connections from his extensive time at the Bundesliga club.

Sokratis has been at Dortmund since 2013, making over 100 appearances. The Greek defender moved to the Bundesliga from AC Milan, going out on loan to Werder Bremen, until moving to Dortmund over 5years ago.

Sokratis seems tailor made to add a bit of steel and nous to proceedings to Arsenal’s back four, something they badly need.
