Emile Smith-Rowe is the next youngster to earn rave reviews and also the attention of the fans, after his brilliant displays in the pre-season games just passed.
The teenager looked every bit the part despite his tender years, and Unai Emery has obviously been impressed not only by the skills of Smith-Rowe, but also his maturity, which belies his years.
This would make sense when coupled with the latest reports coming from the Gunners camp, which state that Emery himself made moved to block any prospective loan moves for the youth.
It is said that Emery is keen to keep Smith-Rowe ensconced within the Arsenal first-team picture, to maintain a close eye on his development and ensure everything is in place for this burgeoning talent.
It is easy to see why Smith-Rowe would be an attractive option for clubs looking for a bright spark. The midfielder has a great touch and showed fantastic vision in the fleeting glimpses we saw of him this summer. It is his showings for the Arsenal youth sides though, that have propelled him to the fringes of first-team recognition.
Just look at the goal he scored versus Atletico Madrid recently. Against top opposition, with the pressure and hype of his first real chance on his slender shoulders, his touch bamboozled defenders, and his instinctive finish flew into the corner from distance.
Smith-Rowe has been on the radar for quite some time, and Arsenal youth expert Jeorge Bird has tweeted prolifically about him for a while now, so this wasn’t a sudden explosion. Smith-Rowe has been building toward this for a while.
It will be difficult for the kid to break through in his position, with so many established stars ahead of him on the wings, central midfield and the playmaker position, but with a talent as bright as his and the backing of Emery, Smith-Rowe could well make his proper breakthrough very soon.
