Some pieces of news fly under the radar and only the benefit of hindsight can really highlight how big the news really is.
Well, the fact that Emile Smith-Rowe has just signed a long term contract with the club is huge for the future - but also potentially the present.
Smith-Rowe has steadily impressed in the youth ranks with Arsenal, especially last season, and this pre-season has been included in Unai Emery’s first team plans, as the kid’s talent has been apparent to everyone who has witnessed him play, and Emery has been no exception.
Smith-Rowe is understandably delighted with the progress he is making, and, speaking to the club’s media team, said;
“To be honest, it feels great for me. It’s something I’ve always dreamt of since I was young, so to sign a new contract with Arsenal, I’m just so happy and it feels surreal at the moment.”
He continued, saying “Knowing how Arsenal play and knowing the background of the club is something I really look up to. The new head coach really inspires me so hopefully I can get chances in the team to prove how good I am.”
Smith Rowe also spoke of how the team spirit is at Arsenal right now, saying “I just feel so comfortable. The players are so welcoming. No one’s tried to leave me out of the group or anything, so when I’m at Arsenal, it feels like a family. Everyone’s just so together and I think that’s helped me so much on and off the pitch.”
It is great news that we have tied down such a promising player to the club long term. Of course it is early days whether Smith-Rowe will reach his full potential, with hazards like a switch in mentality and injuries extremely prevalent in curtailing the blossoming of youthful talent, but the first step is done.
Smith-Rowe has impressed his new boss and is now involved with the first team. It is now up to him to keep his foot on the accelerator and make sure he maximises every chance he gets. He’s doing a fine job so far.
