Arsenal released some interesting videos today. Interviews with Vinai Venkatesham – our Managing Director – and Raul Sanllehi – our Head of Football – revealed their relationship with Josh and Stan Kroenke, and where our owners stand in terms of ambition.

Of course, there was never any doubt that Venkatesham and Sanllehi would seek to assuage us all that the Kroenke gravy train was set up to achieve success at Arsenal, but it was very interesting to hear of the dynamic between our Managing Director, our Head of Football and the Americans.

Whatsapps, emails and phone conversations are exchanged daily, and weekly and monthly meetings take place between them to ensure the Arsenal vehicle is pointing in the right direction, but there were certain things underlined.

One thing Venkatesham and Sanllehi were keen to put across was that our mission to compete once more in the Champions League and for the Premier League title would be a long one and is currently a work in progress. That means that we are on our way and have the target in sight, but we aren’t on the home straight yet – as Venkatesham and Sanllehi point out – there will be plenty of ups and downs to come.

The other point was that our club intend to stick to the self-sustaining model, which will see no investment from our owners and this aligns with Financial Fair Play rules – but not with our competitors.

With City currently under investigation and European giants such as PSG enjoying bottomless pockets being backed by oil-rich nations, our dedication to self-sustenance may be admirable, but it may well hamper our short-term goals.

Still, it does give us a greater chance of success when foreign investors do decide on their next plaything and drop their football clubs. We are running on our own pennies – Venkatesham and Sanllehi both confirmed that Kroenke has maintained that every penny generated by our club is ours to spend back into the club.

Our Managing Director and Head of Football maintain that Kroenke is passionate about winning with Arsenal and that Unai Emery is achieving in line with expectations – but there will be precious little love for our owners despite the words illustrating their passion for Arsenal.

You can find the interviews on the Arsenal website for everything from Emery’s progress in their eyes, to our investment into the club, and they are well worth a watch.

This summer should be interesting…
