From one of the hottest prospects in Europe, William Saliba is now being sent on loan for the remainder of the season.
The young Frenchman has been sent back to Ligue Un to play out the season with Nice. This may sound like the final nail in the coffin for the defender at Arsenal – given his standing at the club.
But Mikel Arteta seems to have greenlit this loan with a view to finally getting Saliba on the pitch.
With the defender being omitted from both the Premier League and Europa League squads, Saliba’s prospects at Arsenal looked bleak. Reports behind the scenes spoke of Saliba’s rawness and how he wasn’t the finished article in terms of readiness for the Premier League and all it brings. But when Saliba was left out of both squads, there was definite surprise from us fans.
But to get ready, Saliba needs minutes, and action for our Under-23’s is not enough to get Saliba where he needs to be. So a loan move, back to more familiar territory makes perfect sense. Most loan moves of this length would normally end in a view to buy clause – but Arsenal have not inserted any such clause – so this loan move will be just that, with Saliba returning to Arsenal with more experience under his belt.
Saliba had to deal with tragedy since arriving in London, with a close member of family passing away. At such a young age, being away from home and having to deal with an incident of this nature is a massive cause of stress, so a loan move will help Saliba re-centre himself and spend more time with those who matter most.
We can watch on and see how Saliba performs at Nice, satisfied that the youngster will be coming back to us improved, every minute benefitting him and us.
Good luck William, we know you’ve got what it takes.
