The plot thickens.
No sooner than Aston Villa table a lucrative £20m bid for the impressive Emi Martinez, do we then see a rumour intensifying about a possible loan deal for another goalkeeper!
In a possible move that would tidy up the loose ends, PSG and France goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is being offered to Arsenal on a loan deal. The 27 year old spent last season on loan at Real Madrid and would certainly give Mikel Arteta a bit of thinking time before deciding to take the plunge or not.
At the bottom of this story is of course, money. PSG would not be offering a goalkeeper to Arsenal if we didn’t need one. At this present moment we are well stocked with two brilliant number one’s – but that is where the problem lies. Both Martinez and Leno deserve to start games and if we are to raise funds for the Thomas Partey deal – which is widely believed to be around £50m – then a £20m cheque could well tip the balance on what we decide for Martinez.
The Argentinean would be a sore miss as he adores the club and has shown he is more than ready to take the responsibility that being a first choice keeper brings. But should Martinez decide that the Villa move would suit him – then a replacement in the form of Areola would ease the blow a tad. The French goalkeeper is certainly equipped to give Bernd Leno some competition this season and if called on, would be more than adequate.
Areola made only four appearances for Real last season and in 2015-16, spent the season on loan at Villareal, so he is accustomed to playing away from his homeland, but he has been unable to hold down a regular spot at PSG so a season away from his club to regain confidence and show what he can do would be a good move for the Frenchman.
Would this move suit all parties? If we are resigned to losing Martinez, would Areola fill the gap?
