Nicolas Pepe and his arrival at Arsenal has certainly had us enraptured.
Every instant of his short time at the club has been expertly captured by the club’s social media team, from his transfer completion at London Colney, to his initial training session and fitness workout by the club’s physios.
The season has now started, and the anticipation is building to see our record buy really stretch his legs. We’ve been treated to a power-packed cameo against Burnley last weekend – and the tricks and pace that saw the Clarets struggle to contain Pepe have only served to heighten the excitement surrounding Pepe and what he can do.
Now Pepe has spoken out about the welcome the club and Unai Emery has given him, and the work that goes on behind the scenes with new arrivals.
Pepe commented on Emery and his ability to speak French has been instrumental in him finding his feet in an Arsenal shirt. Pepe mentioned new tactics and methods he has to learn quickly, and the fact that this can be conveyed quickly in French is a big factor for the attacker.
Pepe spoke further, talking of the ambition of Arsenal being the core reason why he found himself in London, rather than at any other of his admirers. He mentioned that the intention of Arsenal this season is simple – to regain our Champions League status and to go one better than last season – and win the Europa League.
This would definitely constitute success for Arsenal, and after last season’s final capitulation at the hands of Chelsea, it would also serve as wrapping up some unfinished business.
One thing is for sure, signings of the ilk of Nicolas Pepe certainly improve our chances of winning silverware, and from what Pepe said to the media – the full interview can be found on the BBC Sport website – it seems he is the ideal player, both in a footballing sense and in mentality too, to help us achieve these goals.
This season is going to be a good one.
