During the recent World Cup, we were regaled by each and every tottenham fan regarding the amount of their players not only on international duty, but appearing in the England World Cup squad.

Holding it aloft as if it was some sort of proof of quality, spurs fans were rejoicing at their star men performing for their respective nations. They were salivating at Alli, Kane, Trippier and co donning the England shirt.

England went further than they have at any major tournament since 1996, but tottenham now need to be a little worried.

It isn’t all that great having your men called up for international duty. Fatigue will become their bedfellow, sapping the muscles when it comes to business time in December when the games come thick and fast, and fitness really does rise to the fore.

This is why Mesut Ozil, who no doubt would prefer to be with Die Mannschaft, will benefit from his stance on racism in the hierarchy of German football.

It means he gets to train more and learn more with Unai Emery. It means he can further accustom himself to the wishes of his Spanish coach, and define his role a little clearer.

Ozil has had one hell of a hangover since his statement and subsequent fallout from his calling out of German football officials. His displays for Arsenal have been rather underwhelming, and some time on the training field with his coach can only benefit the German.

His last performance, while not bearing assists, was a positive. He carried the ball well and put in the hard yards, and looked at least a shadow of the player we know he is.

He played at the World Cup, but his country’s early exit will help in the long run, and with the plethora of international fixtures that break up the domestic season, it will help Ozil get back to where he needs to be.

Ozil’s contract renewal will mean there are a few more targets on his back than others. He is meant to be the example to follow, and with a break and an extended wedge of time to acclimatise to this new Arsenal method, the playmaker will be on his way back sooner rather than later.

Spurs can have the bragging rights with their players wearing the 3 lions.

If more of our players missed out on international callups. the benefit would be there for all to see come May.
