Why look elsewhere when we have a solution right at home?
The transfer window promises many answers, immediate balms to place on an ailment. We could fill a gap easily with just a little splurge, just take a dip in the window and all will be well.
It takes real bravery to trust that the solution is already in the squad.
We have loaned out the likes of Emile Smith-Rowe, James Olayinka and Eddie Nketiah – who has since been recalled – but there are still a healthy crop of youth players that are ensconced within our squad – and they may hold the answer for next season.
This season holds little promise of success. The Premier League top four seems a pipe dream for us and with us having to rebuild this campaign from the ground up, a cup run doesn’t seem likely either. While we may have a chance of silverware, this season represents the ideal setting for blooding our kids in preparation for the next.
Jo Willock has made plenty of appearances this season, both as a box-to-box midfielder and as a playmaker. He has shown remarkable maturity for his age and with Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil on shaky ground when it comes to their future, Willock could accrue some more gametime this season in order to be stronger come next season.
Reiss Nelson and Bukayo Saka are both blessed with unreal talent, and have both featured heavily this season. The wide positions are a pain point for us as most of our players who occupy these roles are actually forwards who like to cut in. Nelson and Saka both are potent when it comes to doing the same, but they are great at playing the conventional wide role, putting in crosses and compromising the full-back.
Eddie may well find his minutes hampered this season with the competition in front of him, but he could have his chances increased next season. A half season with a few goals and next season will definitely have better prospects.
Then there is AMN. Maitland-Niles has done a fine job of deputizing as full back, but he is a fine central midfielder who may well have his future as a DM. Tough-tackling and great at positioning, his games at right-back have given him extra nous when it comes to the defensive arts.
So far, that should save us about 100-150 million.
Keep faith with our kids, let’s hope Raul Sanllehi, Edu and Mikel Arteta do the same.
