It’s crunch time for many of our players this summer, but one of our squad stands on the precipice, close to both the exit door and a fully-fledged spot in the squad.
Young Eddie Nketiah is reportedly the subject of interest from newly promoted Charlton Athletic, and the Championship side could prove to be the perfect loan platform for the striker.
Nketiah has continued to bang in the goals on the international stage, but opportunities at club level have been understandably harder to come by. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette stand in front of Nketiah in the queue, so a loan for the season, to fully prove his readiness to Unai Emery, may well be the answer.
Nketiah broke through the season before in the most spectacular fashion, a late substitute, the striker scored two late goals in the Carabao Cup to first equalise and then score the eventual winner.
Since then, it’s fair to say our fans have kept a close eye on the youngster, but five appearances in the Premier League – with one goal scored – means that his progression was severely limited by the two outstanding strikers in front of him.
So, a loan move to the Championship, and Charlton Athletic, could prove to be the ideal solution. He would be playing regularly at a decent level – the Championship is severely competitive, and with a bagful of goals, he could be considered for a long-term role at Arsenal.
He will need a decent season under his belt if he is to make it at Arsenal though. He will need to be lucky with injuries first and foremost, and with manager Lee Bowyer uncertain of staying on, Nketiah will require a new man coming in who gives the kid a chance.
Once that is certain, it is down to Nketiah alone to trust his skills and do his utmost on the pitch. His goal ratio for the England Under-18’s and Under-21’s proves he has what it takes.
