The rumour of Monchi has only just surfaced but another story has arisen as a result of the Spaniard being heavily linked with Arsenal.

According to sources in Italy, Monchi has already drawn up a shortlist of five players that could push Arsenal to the next level, and his experience in Italy, no matter how short, has affected his list.

Two of the five players hail from Serie A, with Juventus defender Daniele Rugani and Roma forward Nicolo Zaniolo part of a five man list. The other three that are reportedly lined up for an Arsenal approach once Monchi signs up for the Gunners are PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot, Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega and highly rated Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico.

Adrien Rabiot is probably the biggest name on the list, with the PSG man refusing a new contract with the French giants and so is hot property amongst the biggest clubs in Europe.

Nicolo Zaniolo is Roma’s young striker that is gaining headlines for his goals this season and could boost our frontline, but the price tag could well be an issue and could need player sales to offset the figure.

The same could be said for Tagliafico, with the Madrid clubs known to have an interest in the young Argentinian fullback.

Daniele Rugani is a household name in Italy and yet is still only 24. He has already earned full caps for his country and is another who would cost the earth, but with a clearout expected in our defence, we could be in the market for a strong defender for the future.

Then there is Ever Banega, who has been heavily linked with Arsenal ever since Unai Emery took the reins. The grizzled midfielder has been an integral part of Sevilla’s team for some time and was relied on by Emery, so he knows he can perform a certain role in the squad.

Monchi will have his work cut out highlighting players that could be purchased in a hamstrung budget. He will be left with no illusions that his shopping list must adhere to the strict rules that our spending limitations will bring, but the first step is drawing closer. Monchi will most likely rejoin with Emery, and then his hard work starts.

If he manages to sign two of the five mentioned above, he will have done well.
