It’s finally been confirmed by Arsenal - Lucas Torreira is officially a Gunner.
The Uruguayan has passed his medical and had his first ever photoshoot in the red and white of Arsenal, and the 22 year old has met his new boss Unai Emery, who is extremely impressed with the former Sampdoria man, telling Arsenal Media;
“In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game. A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.”
Torreira has only just finished on international duty, featuring in all five of Uruguay’s games in their run to the World Cup Quarter-Finals, where he excelled in his bustling defensive midfield role.
The diminutive midfield man is seen to be the missing link that Arsenal have needed for quite some time, and with his figures at Sampdoria, it’s easy to get carried away.
In just thirty six appearances last season, he made 72 interceptions (2 a game), 101 tackles, created 36 chances and had 87% pass accuracy, proving he’s no one-trick pony.
His strength though, lies in protecting the defence, and the fact he has made more tackles in two seasons with Sampdoria than anyone in Serie A shows that not only is he excellent at winning possession, it means he is no one-season wonder.
Torreira will join with the squad in August, meaning a period of acclimatization will be required, but this new signing looks like it could hold the key to Arsenal’s midfield problems.
Welcome to Arsenal Lucas!
