The transfer window doesn’t open until Thursday, and yet we have already seen some outlandish rumours surfacing regarding our purported transfer activity.

Among those rumours was a story concerning our player of the year, Alexandre Lacazette, and a reported megabucks move to Barcelona.

The Frenchman may have scored less than his striking compatriot and close friend Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but his overall contribution to the team was not overlooked by Gooners and the lub, who recognised his worth by awarding the striker with the Player of the Year award.

Lacazette scored 13 goals in 35 Premier League appearances this season, but it is his assists and desire for the team that really has seen fans take to him. Eight assists highlights his all-round play that really does give us something different up top, and his constant running to regain possession means an effective press can start from the very front.

So it’s no surprise that a club of Barca’s structure is apparently interested. The Spanish giants will be heavily investing this summer, with a fair amount of players outgoing from the Camp Nou. Antoine Griezmann is another name linked with the Catalan side, and with the Atletico forward a close friend of Lacazette, it could be a tempting offer for Laca.

It would be madness on Arsenal’s part to even consider a potential bid though, and another story emanating from the media recently is that Arsenal’s backroom re very keen to tie up both of Lacazette and Aubameyang with contract extensions and far better monetary terms than before.

Could Arsenal maintain progress next season without Lacazette? It’s doubtful. Even if we received a huge transfer fee, would the money help find us a striker that fulfils the all-action role that Lacazette provides? There aren’t many forwards that can offer what the Frenchman offers.

Arsenal’s summer should be focused on who we are bringing in to push us to the next level – and letting Lacazette leave would severely undermine our next season before it even begins.
