Club Captain Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel with the squad to the US as part of our pre-season schedule.
In a move completely out of character with the previously loyal Frenchman, Koscielny is expected to continue to take part in training, with disciplinary procedures to be administered if the defender fails to tow the line.
The club delivered a statement on the situation, which is sure to have ripple effects through the squad, which said;
“Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel to the US for our pre-season tour.”
“We are very disappointed by Laurent’s actions, which are against our clear instructions. We hope to resolve this matter and will not be providing any further comment at this time.”
Prior to Koscielny refusing to travel, there had been speculation regarding the player and a move back to his homeland, more specifically a transfer to Bordeaux.
It is believed that Koscielny had asked the club to dissolve the last year of his contract in order to move, which the club have obviously refused. The talks between the clubs prior to this latest development had been positive, but now it seems there can be no future for Koscielny at the club – and Unai Emery must now make plans to push next season without his skipper.
Laurent joined the club back in 2010, and has been a mainstay in our defence since his arrival. Will this mean that Koscielny will lose the captains armband? Apparently he is still the captain at this present time – but how much longer will that last?
Koscielny’s move means that his time at the club must be at an end, and the manner in which he has acted means that it will be tainted with a sour note. Whether this means that Koscielny will be given the move he so desires remains to be seen, but another season as a Gunner surely cannot happen.
This saga will surely rumble on and we at The Arsenal Review will keep you updated.
