According to a high-profile newspaper in Italy, Arsenal are interested in a player swap deal involving our very own Granit Xhaka – and former spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen.
The reporter for the paper, Francesco Porzio states that the Danish midfielder is unhappy with his current situation at Inter Milan and seeks a move away from the San Siro – and Arsenal are on the lookouts for more creativity.
Eriksen only left for Inter in January, but he has only started 15 games for the Nerazzuri. The playmaker is not suffering with injury though – as his exploits for his country recently show quite clearly a man in form. Five goals in five games for the Danes and you can see why Eriksen is keen for more game time.
Then you add Xhaka’s situation into the mix and the plausibility inches up a notch or two. With Thomas Partey’s arrival, starts have been harder to come by for the Swiss midfielder. Xhaka has been on the bench more than he would like to be and more than he is used to, so a move away may well suit him.
Much hinges on Xhaka fitting into Inter manager Antonio Conte’s system. This is the reason why Eriksen is most likely being left out, with Conte placing much emphasis on width and counter-attacking rather than creativity. Central midfield strength is something he values, so Xhaka could well flourish under the former Chelsea boss.
Would Eriksen be a good fit for Arsenal? A move to Arsenal for a former spurs man is a difficult one to swallow, but there is no denying that if he could fit into what Arteta is building, that we would have a very effective player on our hands should we swoop for him.
This story may well come to fruition, but much will depend on how our team cope through January. If the dry run continues then Arteta could well sanction a move for the likes of Eriksen, with Xhaka being the makeweight to go the other way, saving us money in the process.
What do you think? Would Eriksen work for us? Would you want a former spurs man in our red and white? Comments below!
