It seems as if Arsenal target Gabriel Magalhaes is a wanted man.

Despite inching toward a move to the Gunners, the Brazilian is being linked with late moves to PSG and Man City – two clubs with the deepest of pockets.

So what’s the fuss all about regarding this player? The majority of us wouldn’t have heard of Magalhaes before us being linked with him, so here is the info on the 22 year old.

The Lille defender started his pro career in the second tier of Brazilian football with Avai FC. But in 2016, he signed for Lille for a fee of around £2.7m. The defender made an eight minute appearance as a sub against Guingamp that season and the next year, he was loaned out to Troyes.

There was little impact at Troyes, but another loan spell, this time to Dynamo Zagreb in Croatia, proved to be the catalyst for his career in Europe. He played plenty and upon returning to Lille, he began to make the first eleven with alacrity.

It has been this season though, that has seen Magalhaes rise to prominence. The defender played every minute of Lille’s dismal Champions League campaign – the French side picked up a solitary point from their group, which contained Valencia, Ajax and Chelsea – and accrued 24 Ligue Un appearances, which helped Lille achieve 4th spot. The season was of course cut short in France, but Magalhaes had left his mark – and could now apparently choose from plenty of clubs who desire his services.

Magalhaes is strong in the air and isn’t easily shrugged off the ball. He is of the new breed of defenders who are equally adept at passing thirty to forty yards as they are slide tackling or defending an aerial bombardment. It looks as if he is ready-made as a good fit for the Arteta methodology, but this deal is still not over the line. And with megabucks PSG and City entering the fray, Magalhaes’ head could be turned if he hasn’t put the pen to paper yet.
