Two matches into Freddie Ljungberg’s tenure as interim boss and the Swede is still looking for his first win.

This has invariably led to most declaring that Ljungberg is not the right man for the job.

True, it hasn’t been pretty to watch at times, the home loss to Brighton in particular showed that the failings from Unau Emery’s tenure are still live and in full effect. There has been improvement in terms of our attack and chances created, but how does Ljungberg sort out this mire of a defence and the complete lack of a structured midfield that lends a hand at the back?

This is an ailment that will take more than a round of antibiotics, this is something that could require footballing surgery.

Is the problem tactical, or is it simply we don’t have the players necessary to sort the problem? We can all see that Shkodran Mustafi has a blunder in him, and David Luiz is perhaps better suited to the defensive midfield role than in the heart of our backline, but what of the rest – are they up to scratch?

Rob Holding is probably our best bet when it comes to central defence, and in Calum Chambers we have a player who is versatile and can do a job in two positions.

After that, for our centre-backs, we don’t really have enough quality to see us improve. We need to recruit, or we could promote young Zech Medley as let’s be honest, he can be blooded and still not make as many errors as our current defence.

In midfield, Granit Xhaka may well have the long pass of a footballing quarterback, and the winning motives of a leader, but he is a square peg in a round hole and not the type of player that is demanded for this fight. We need a tackler, someone who offloads the ball quickly once he has won it.

We need Lucas Torreira from last year.

January’s window is approaching and will come after the hectic festive schedule. Heaven knows where we will be in the league table after so many games but if this slump continues, then the club should be left in no uncertain terms that heavy investment after a clearout is needed.

As things stand, Freddie Ljungberg is attempting to put out a fire with a thimble full of water.
