With just nine games to go, we are within touching distance of the hallowed Champions League places, and we are still in the hat for the Europa League.
With such a massive change last summer - surely we would have taken this if offered to us after Wenger left?
The aftermath of last season showed our wheels falling off and the squad appeared to require a massive rebuild. We had deadwood filling the players roster and a tactics and training regimen that was tired and easily predictable.
Unai Emery appeared to have it all to do, and so us being a solitary point from the top four, and with a great chance of Europa League progression, the Spanish coach has exceeded what most thought would occur.
So much change needs transition. Firstly, the years and years of the same training methods were swapped out for intense workouts and a focus on video preparation and cardio so we could cope with a more physically demanding pressing game.
That is still a work in progress but we have seen in fits and bursts what the finished article will produce. We have covered the most ground out of all sides in the top flight so far this season.
Then there was the ins and outs. We discarded many and replaced where needed - with a real emphasis on central midfield. Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and the versatility of Denis Suarez gives us a blend of approaches that will benefit the fluid approach that Emery favours.
With so many changes though, this again requires time to gel, but doesn’t our close vicinity to the top four show us that despite us merely approaching the finished article, we can look forward to a vastly improves side? One that will continue to get better and climb up the table?
It is far too early to say where Emery will take us. We have a limited transfer budget, injuries could bite us and we could continue to lose our top stars a la Ramsey. To truly contend we need to keep up with the likes of City, who have limitless resources,
We can at least see that we are heading in the right direction. And after a tumultuous year, that is enough right now.
