One of the worst kept secrets in football this summer has finally been announced.

Edu Gaspar has finally joined Arsenal as Technical Director, after departing the Brazilian national squad after their victory in the Copa America.

The Brazilian now joins Vinai Venkatesham and Raul Sanllehi as part of the decision-making backroom, responsible for spotting and recruiting talent across the globe, directed toward addressing Arsenal’s deficiencies.

Of course, the fact that Edu has prior Gunners links helps with the settling in period and his knowledge of the Premier League will no doubt help. Edu has intimate knowledge of La Liga and Latin American football too, his links with clubs in these regions will hopefully give us the advantage in snaring these potential signings.

The Edu factor kicked in to a degree to enable our purchase of Brazilian wonderkid Gabriel Martinelli, as his call up to the Selecao training camp prior to the Copa America provided the ideal opportunity for Edu to speak at length with Martinelli and plant the idea in his ear.

Only time will tell of the Martinelli swoop pays dividends, but the acquisition of Edu is the final piece of the new regime at the club, designed to take the club forward and segment the multiple roles required at a top flight football club in the modern era. The role of Technical Director is one that Edu is familiar with, and this should finally fill the gap left by the departure of Sven Mislintat earlier this year.

Edu was part of the Invincibles squad in 2004, and the Double winning team of 2002, staying for four years in total, before departing for Valencia. Having previously been with Arsenal means he can hit the ground running – and we really need the Brazilian to do just that.

Our transfer activity has been lacking in correlation to our needs thus far, and with Edu performing his role, new targets will hopefully be acquired with his help.

We had known if his return for some time, so it is hardly a surprise that he has been posted, but it is very good news that all the puzzle pieces are now in place.

Welcome back Edu, now we need your expertise more than ever.
