This summer’s transfer window has been quite ludicrous, given the sheer amount of names that our backroom staff have apparently been in talks with.

Not only that, but whether or not our budget is around £40-50m or not, it is clear that in order to maintain our self-sufficiency, we need to keep our pursestrings as tight as possible.

Every Arsenal fan can see we need certain positions covered. A winger, a defender (or three), and perhaps a box-to-box man to put pressure on Granit Xhaka would be a window well worked, but how much of this shopping list will actually make its way back home to The Emirates?

We have already kicked off our purchasing, with young striker Gabriel Martinelli already taking part in pre-season training. Can we expect much more though?

Of course, but much will depend on our outgoings. Our squad needs a bit of clearing out before we can have the finished article in terms of a competitive squad.

What is becoming very clear though, is our defence needs to be our focus.

Rob Holding and Sokratis are becoming increasingly evident as our first choice pairing. That’s where our certainty ends though, in terms of central defence.

Shkodran Mustafi has shown, despite repeated opportunities, that he can’t be relied upon for a long hard season.

Dinos Mavropanos isn’t quite the finished article quite yet and at this stage of his career, is crying out for a loan spell to mature.

Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal are still among our best defenders, but their age means that the reliability that they once gave us may be a little more on the sporadic side.

Then there is Calum Chambers. The defender/midfielder had a stellar season last year on loan with Fulham and showed all the signs of being ready for the big pressure that comes with playing for Arsenal.

It means that we have three defenders that can give us, week to week, the consistency that we crave – and that means reinforcements are needed desperately.

So while we are linked to a raft of attacking talent every day, it is the defenders names we must look for – as those are the ones that can really give us what we need to reassert ourselves a little higher than we sit right now.
