Arsenal have made a double swoop in the transfer market and it is for two players heavily linked with the Gunners in the past weeks.
Firstly, Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos has joined on a one year loan spell, taking the number eight jersey vacated by Aaron Ramsey.
Then William Saliba was confirmed. The young French defender joined permanently but has been immediately loaned back to St Etienne. The fee is thought to be around the £27m mark.
What do we know of these two new Gunners and their respective deals?
Ceballos was the subject of interest from our neighbours Tottenham, but chose North London after speaking to Hector Bellerin. Ceballos can operate in the centre of the park or further forward, and his control and late runs will certainly add to our options this coming season.
Ceballos skippered the Under21 Spain squad to European Championship victory last month. Ceballos said of his move “The coach was the turning point in terms of me joining this massive club.”
“He’s a Spanish coach and he knows me from my time at other clubs. I also get on with Hector away from football, I told him I was thinking of joining and he told me not to think twice.”
It is thought there are no clauses for purchase for Ceballos, but there could be a first refusal should Ceballos decide to leave the Bernabeu.
Saliba joins under the shadow of a huge fee, but was wanted by many clubs, including Tottenham yet again. Saliba is still only 18, and will go back to St Etienne to gain more experience for his future at Arsenal.
When asked about why he joined, Saliba said “The history, the badge, since I was little I’ve been watching Arsenal play in the Champions League and there are a lot of French players who have come through here.”
Saliba is a great prospect even if he won’t feature for us next season. His presence back at St Etienne will give Les Verts a whole lot more support as Gooners track the progress of our new recruit.
Both players will help, but Ceballos is very much a present day asset. The moves are welcome additions and hopefully we aren’t quite finished yet.
Welcome Dani and William!
