The ongoing rumours surrounding Sven Mislintat aren’t coming at the best time.

The German with the Diamond Eyes was supposed to be a lynchpin of the new, post-Wenger regime. Instead, the man who is responsible for spotting some of the biggest names in the game looks set to be leaving the club.

Never mind the confusion regarding the direction of the club, the more immediate worry is who will spot the new defenders we sorely need?

Speaking of regimes, the long-standing presence of Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal have helped us through some sticky moments, but these two veterans - who have varying circumstances - but both will have at the very least, lessening impact next season.

Captain Koscielny has only just returned from a serious injury, one that has often taken a yard from the very best. Koscielny is 33 now, and the shadow of the damage caused by the injury will loom a little larger than if it were to happen five years ago.

Then we have Nacho. The Spaniard has signed an extension to his deal to take him to 2020, but is also pat his best years - he will be 33 next month. His injury woes have been plentiful, and with Sead Kolasinac having an extended run in the team and having success going forward, Monreal may play second fiddle next season.

Besides, if we go into 2019/20 with Koscielny and Monreal as our first choice - is that not inviting bad luck?

Yes, we have Sokratis and Rob Holding, and Calum Chambers may yet force his way in, but we still need reinforcements. With that being the case, the best man to identify what we need is now leaving the club, according to reports.

Koscielny and Monreal have been fantastic servants to Arsenal and deserve to go on their own terms as opposed to being forced out, but it is clear we need bodies in defence.

Let’s hope Sven left some notes before he leaves.
