Calum Chambers has his moment.
Finally, after season upon season of loan moves that has required him to prove himself in a struggling team, now the England defender has the chance to prove he is worthy of a place at Arsenal.
Things have aligned well for Chambers this season too.
With Laurent Koscielny having departed the club, this coming campaign will see plenty of opportunity for Chambers, and with that will come the chance for hopefully some international recognition. With Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings having been recently called up to Gareth Southgate’s squad, Chambers and the returning Holding both can catch the eye of Southgate with their displays.
It has been a while since Arsenal had much presence in an England squad, but before anything else, Chambers and to a lesser degree Holding, both must reassert themselves on our starting lineup.
Sokratis has established himself as the first pick when it comes to a starting spot in central defence, and with the arrival of David Luiz, it does mean both English defenders have a bit of a fight on their hands to get ahead in the pecking order.
Luiz has his previous relationship with Emery at PSG, so both know how each other works, but both Chambers and Holding could not have done much more prior to this season in proving their worth.
Rob Holding before his knee injury was a steadfast rock in a sea of uncertainty last season, and with age being on his side, he will be confident that he can reach and surpass those heights once more.
Chambers was Fulham’s Player of the Season last year and his performances in the centre of midfield as the defensive element showed he has skill to match his defensive nous. His display this season in our first game – the 1-0 win over Newcastle – was exactly what we needed it to be and must have given Emery food for thought.
With domestic cup competitions and the Europa League commitments stretching our squad, both defenders will get their opportunity to shine and force Emery’s hand a little.
Let us hope that both do enough to show that they have the possibility of being our first choice pairing for the foreseeable future.
