Despite the transfer window closing some time ago, we are still hearing and seeing many rumours upon the footballing grapevine.
The latest story concerns a player that was heavily linked to us in the last window, Sevilla and Argentina’s Ever Banega.
The teak-tough midfielder was a trusted lieutenant of Emery’s time at Sevilla, and his set of skills seem to be a good match for Arsenal. So much so that The Mirror have speculated upon Banega’s destination possibly being The Emirates this summer.
The 30 year old was pencilled in for a January reunion with Emery, but a noted lack of funds put paid to any potential move.
Would the Argentinean be a good addition though?
Banega and Emery may well have forged a decent working relationship, but Emery’s early part of his tenure at Sevilla saw him leave out Banega until his fitness was sharp enough and he had successfully adapted to his methods - remind you of a certain German’s circumstances?
This season has seen a rise in Banega’s goal threat, with four goals in six Europa League games so far for the central man, and 3 goals and 3 assists in 22 La Liga matches. This is a sharp rise in attacking impact than his perceived role, which is the safety net for Sevilla.
Could this be something that could aid his arrival? With Aaron Ramsey off in the summer, a supply of goals from deep is something we could do with replacing, but is Banega the answer for that?
With his age on the wrong side of peak, Banega could be a useful addition, but not long term - and with a price tag of 17m, the Sevilla player may not be the addition that sends us Gooners into raptures.
Our desperate need for a wide man may usurp any move for Banega this summer, and our lack of bodies at the back that can hold a line with any consistency mean that this story of 30 year old Banega joining forces once more with his former boss may well be wide of the mark.
