Fresh on the heels of stories surrounding Barcelona’s interest in one of our star players, Alexandre Lacazette, the rumour mill swung into full effect once again.
This time though, the rumours were about our other striker and Golden Boot winner, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Real Madrid are the courters this time, and the Spanish giants manager is apparently very interested in replacing outgoing Gareth Bale with our Gabon striker.
The bid is reported to be around the £80m mark, and the number would have to be around that mark for Arsenal to be tempted to do business. This story is unlikely to come to fruition though, with both players happy at Arsenal and our club looking to extend both of their contracts with improved terms.
Real Madrid are a tempting offer for any player though, and Zidane will be very busy this summer as he will be responsible for a massive rebuilding project at the Bernabeu. Many players who were part of the triple European Cup winning side will be leaving the club after a disappointing season that saw the Madrid club knocked out of the Champions League early and finish outside of the top two of La Liga for the first time in some years.
So Zidane will have a shortlist, and would any of us be surprised that the Premier League’s top scorer would be on that very list? It makes sense, but we have to hope that Unai Emery’s project is a tantalising one, and that his bromance with strike partner Lacazette is as strong as it appears.
What could swing it in our favour is Champions League participation next season. Should we win the Europa League, we would be back in the competition next season. Should we fail?
Well, Real will be participating in the competition, and would be able to offer far higher wages than we could manage.
Let’s hope that Aubameyang opts for happiness rather than readies…
