Arsenal duo Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alex Iwobi have been nominated for the 2018 African Player of the Year after being named amongst the 34-man shortlist.

Iwobi, who represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup in the summer, made the cut despite a disappointing year for Arsenal, but he did lead his national side to the World Cup, as they suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat to Lionel Messi’s Argentina which denied them a spot in the knockout stages of the competition.

Iwobi’s teammate and former African Player of the Year winner Aubameyang netted ten goals last season after a January move from Germany’s Borussia Dortmund. The Gabonese star has already emulated last year’s numbers as his two goals in Sunday’s north London derby positioned him first in this season’s top scoring listings.

The Arsenal duo were joined on the list by former winners Mohamed Salah and Riyad Marez while Everton’s Idrissa Gueye, Liverpool’s Naby Keita and Sadio Mane and Crystal Palace’s Wilfired Zaha also made the cut.

The awards gala will be held in Dakar, Senegal on Tuesday 8th January.
