Transfer talk has shifted of late, now that Unai Emery has done the majority of his recruitment we are all left to wonder - who will get the boot from the squad?
It is clear we are carrying a few that need to be found another club, but one name has risen to the top of the list in the last couple of days that no one really could have predicted.
Alex Iwobi is being looked at by Serie A side Lazio, according to reports in Italy. The 22 year old is apparently the subject of an incoming bid, thought to be in the region of 20-25m Euros.
Now, the source is less than concrete, but normally there is no smoke without fire, and the Nigerian being talked about in the same breath as leaving the club could point toward work done by agents to engineer interest from other clubs.
Iwobi is a divisive figure in our fanbase, with a large number of the opinion that the winger won’t improve and has been given ample opportunity.
Last season was only his second full season however, and all youth prodigies normally suffer a dip in their second season as expectations tug at their progress and defenders get wiser. Iwobi was no exception.
Iwobi can possess a lightning quick reaction and the ability to ghost past players with ease. He has a touch that can bewilder, but the problem with Iwobi is that his decision making needs to improve - as well as his consistency.
With Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and others all capable of playing on the flanks, Iwobi has severe competition to get gametime. Iwobi’s head could be turned by a guarantee of first team football, but the Arsenal youth product has an opportunity to improve at the club that pushed him through, and forge a legacy with fans.
The ball is in his court - and hopefully not his agent’s.
