Arsenal did some pretty good business in the transfer window, addressing some areas of the squad that needed some TLC in the face of another rigorous season.
Gabriel Magalhaes will definitely add his class and strength to our backline and with Calum Chambers approaching full fitness and David Luiz enjoying a renaissance – as well as the promise of William Saliba, the addition of Pablo Mari and the reliable Rob Holding – our defence looks in good shape.
In midfield, the indomitable Thomas Partey could well be the jigsaw piece we have been waiting for and with Willian added out wide, we have not only class, but a great blend of defensive nous and attacking talent.
We did offload a few of course; Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira were casualties of our over-abundance in our squad – but did we address this enough?
We still have some issues regarding deadwood. Sokratis, Shkodran Mustafi and a couple of others are on the fringes of our squad and face a bleak season with precious little action in terms of gametime. Now, with the deadline to name our official squad for the Premier League season incoming, we have a problem.
With our incoming signings, it means we are over in terms of numbers for non-homegrown players. It means two will need to be cut from our squad and they will play no part in our domestic season.
The list, taken from Arseblog’s superb article on this subject, is as follows:
From the names above, there are two that need to be culled for the Premier League squad. With no matches played for quite some time, both Sokratis and Mesut Ozil look the likeliest candidates to be chopped from the roster. The clearest sign yet that Mikel Arteta fully intends for Ozil to see out his Arsenal contract in exile.
