With the surprising move of Calum Chambers being loaned to Fulham for the season, Arsenal have unsurprisingly been linked with a plethora of defenders to provide decent cover - or even insert themselves into the first team setup.

One name that is heavily linked with Arsenal is Croatia and Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida, and the imposing-looking centre-half has already confirmed he is on the move from the Turkish club, and wants Besiktas to facilitate his move.

With Sokratis, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Konstandinos Mavropanos already vying for the first team, and Laurent Koscielny due to return in December, Arsenal already look well stocked in the centre of defence, but there are many news reports connecting Vida to Arsenal, and for a hefty sum.

Vida, 29, has only been at Besiktas for a season, but his performances for Croatia in the run to the World Cup final have alerted clubs to his presence, and Vida will know that at 29, this is his last opportunity to really cash in - and with a bid of a reported 30 million already lined up, it seems the Gunners want to spend big to add more experience to their defence.

Pre-season hinted that Calum Chambers would be the preferred first choice alongside either Sokratis or Mustafi, but now the young England man is at Craven Cottage for the entirety of the season, it would appear that both Mustafi and Sokratis will comprise the defensive pairing.

This isn’t a bad idea, with Sokratis offering the better decision making and providing the cool, clear head that Mustafi sometimes lacks. And Mustafi provides deceptively quick recovery pace that can clean up behind the slower Sokratis. With Holding and Mavropanos as able deputies, it appears as though Emery has what he needs in the backline, but the Vida links refuse to go away.

The transfer window closes at 5pm on Thursday, so this leaves precious little time for Raul Sanllehi and co to get the deal over the line, but you can’t help but feel that Arsenal would be better suited searching for some genuine width rather than with another experienced pro in the defence.

Still, Vida would offer more security at the back, and an extra body during the gruelling season is always a good thing.

We will find out if this deal happens pretty soon, with less than 24hrs to go before the window slams shut.
