Arsenal’s pre-season is in full swing, and according to the various news outlets, so are our backroom staff.

Raul Sanllehi and Edu are busy negotiating a number of transfers, if the papers, radio, and websites are to be believed.

The latest transfer rumour that has Sanllehi and Edu reportedly in talks is the much sought-after Lille winger Nicholas Pepe.

Pepe is wanted by many for good reason. The wideman has bagged goals and assists aplenty for Lille since arriving at the club in 2017. A ratio of nearly a goal every two games is seriously impressive for a winger, and it has led to a host of suitors for his signature.

Pepe has outgrown his club and it is well known that the club are attracting bids, but the pricetag for the player is likely to scare off many. The price being bandied around is roughly between £50-80m.

So to see stories in the news surrounding our, Liverpool’s and Napoli’s bids for the player is somewhat surprising. According to many newspaper reports in the last few days, Arsenal, Liverpool and a club in Italy – either Napoli or Inter – have submitted bids for the player. Lille are holding out for an exorbitant sum, and will look to spark a bidding war between the clubs.

This story seems at odds with another transfer target of ours, Wilfried Zaha. Both Ivory Coast wingers, Zaha would command a similar fee to Pepe, and according to many, is our first choice transfer target.

What is abundantly clear is that Arsenal need a wideman and are putting their feelers out, but if either Zaha or Pepe come to the club, what does that mean to the immediate futures of Bukayo Saka and Reiss Nelson? Both are close to making their mark on the first team and a big money move could see them slide down the pecking order or worse, leave the club.

We’ll keep our eyes on this and any other rumour, all you have to do is keep it locked to The Arsenal Review.
