There have been plenty of ludicrous transfer rumours, but the latest really is a stranger to reality.
Reports from the major newspapers are suggesting that former Gunner Alexis Sanchez could be in line to return to Arsenal.
The Chilean severed ties with Arsenal in brutal fashion last season, and his move to Old Trafford has soured spectacularly - to the delight of us fans who used to adore him.
To put his woes in perspective, Alexis averages a goal every 600 or so minutes in a United shirt, where he was banging in a goal every 150 or so minutes as a Gunner.
The preposterous story of his potential return first started just after United’s loss to West Ham, where reports claim he was talking to fellow former Arsenal man, Lucas Perez, saying he joined the wrong club.
This has then manifested into a story where the path back to The Emirates is now open.
There are many obstacles to Sanchez returning to Arsenal. Firstly, Jose Mourinho has always been loath to do business with Arsenal. Secondly, Alexis still has plenty of time left on his contract and would cost a pretty penny. Thirdly, us fans woudn’t exactly welcome the dog-loving attacker back with open arms.
Alexis has not transferred his form for Arsenal to his new club, and Jose Mourinho has struggled to not only get the best out of Sanchez, but to find his best position, having been played all across the attack.
The entire United team are struggling currently, and fans are not enamoured with Alexis so far, seeing as he has failed to find any semblance of what he produced for Arsenal.
Is there a chance for his return? Football should have taught us that anything is possible, but in terms of plausibility, this isn’t likely in any sense of the word. Manchester United would not cut their losses and admit defeat that they signed the wrong player, and Arsenal, as well as Emery, won’t be looking to sign a player like Alexis. Most likely will be a genuine wideman and some defensive reinforcements.
Alexis’ time at Arsenal is over, and for better or worse United are stuck with him. The swap deal that ended with Mkhitaryan at Arsenal looks like a good deal for us with every week that passes.
