Social media has helped bring the world of professional football a little bit closer to us mere mortals.
As footballers become status symbols and idols, the gap between us on the ground floor and those we cherish on the hallowed ground of our stadium’s pitch becomes that little bit bigger.
Social media though, has bridged the chasm somewhat, and we now get to see those players in their spare time and what they enjoy. It adds a touch of normality to what must be a pretty extraordinary position.
We also get to enjoy snippets of transfer possibilities thanks to Instagram, Twitter et al.
Players we follow post pictures and mention other players in their posts, and it is the equivalent of pouring petrol on a naked flame. All of a sudden we are strongly linked with a player that we had never heard of apart from seeing them posing in a photo five minutes previously.
The above happened just days ago, as Matteo Guendouzi posed with a former Lorient teammate of his – a former teammate that is apparently on Unai Emery’s hit list of targets for this summer.
Was Guendouzi working as an agent of Arsenal, trying to woo Alexis Claude-Maurice by inviting him over to his home? It’s a possibility, and the player certainly fits the bill as a replacement for the outgoing Danny Welbeck.
The 20 year old won’t be too demanding to hold down a starting role, and would be happy in Welbeck’s old status as a dependable backup – at least for the time being. The speedy forward has 17 goals in 51 games for Lorient so far, and his technical level and touch are in-keeping with what Emery is trying to foster at Arsenal.
Rated at around £9-15m, Claude-Maurice could be a viable target, especially if we fail to make the Champions League next season. We need quality throughout our squad, and Claude-Maurice is a player that would add lots if he was recruited.
Matteo Guendouzi, continue to woo!
